World Intellectual Property Day 2026: “IP and Sports — Ready, Set, Innovate!”

April 26 marks World Intellectual Property Day, an annual celebration established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to raise awareness of how patents, trademarks, copyrights, and designs shape our world. This year’s theme — “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate” — shines a spotlight on the powerful, often invisible role that intellectual property plays in every dimension of the global sports industry.

More Than Just a Game

When we watch a thrilling match, cheer for our favorite team, or lace up our sneakers for a morning run, we rarely stop to think about the layers of innovation behind the experience. Cutting-edge equipment, team identities, broadcasts of unforgettable sporting moments — intellectual property is key to protecting and promoting the inventions, designs, brands, and stories that drive the world of sports, inspire athletes, and unite fans everywhere.

Sports aren’t just about the game — they intersect with fashion, entertainment, media, health, gaming, and consumer goods. IP such as patents, designs, trademarks, and copyrights incentivizes innovation and enables cross-industry connections, sparking creativity, technological advancement, and economic growth.

Innovation Behind Athletic Performance

From aerodynamic swimsuits to smart wearables that track an athlete’s every heartbeat, patents are the engine of sports technology. Inventors and engineers continuously push the boundaries of what the human body can achieve — and IP protection ensures they are rewarded for doing so.

“Securing IP protection is critical for funding, as it demonstrates novelty and potential impact. Every investor wants to know what impact their investment will have on the target population.”

Rory Cooper — Paralympian Champion & Engineer

His work in assistive technology — protected by IP — has transformed the lives of millions of people with disabilities around the world.

Brands, Broadcasts, and Beyond

A team’s logo is more than a symbol — it is a trademark that carries decades of tradition, loyalty, and commercial value. Broadcasting rights, protected by copyright, allow sporting events to reach billions of viewers globally, generating revenues that flow back to athletes, clubs, and communities.

“Players and athletes are far more IP savvy today, and are increasingly breaking down what was one macro bundle of IP rights into multiple strands where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.”

Stephen Duval & Jason Traub — Co-founders, 23 Capital

This growing IP literacy is transforming how athletes and sports organizations create and capture value.

IP for All: Diversity in Sport

World IP Day 2026 also highlights the richness of sports culture across communities and traditions. Organizations like the Historical African Martial Arts Association (HAMAA) — a community of martial artists, instructors, scholars, and artisans — work to share information and preserve the history and culture of martial arts in Africa and the African diaspora. IP frameworks, including protections for traditional cultural expressions, are crucial in safeguarding these living heritages.

Respect the Game — Respect Copyright

Behind every sporting triumph are years of dedication and sacrifice. Yet illegal streaming puts athletes, fans, and the entire sports ecosystem at risk. On this World IP Day, WIPO urges everyone to support their favorite teams and sports through legitimate channels — protecting the ecosystem that makes sport possible.
